Ganophyllite - Sold

Ganophyllite is a complex manganese layer silicate mineral (Hughes et al. 2003). Hamberg (1890) named the mineral after the Greek for luster and leaf, noting the high luster on cleavage surfaces. This specimen is a nearly pure mass of black platy ganophyllite.

This specimen was part of the personal collection of Ralph Merrill, proprietor of the prolific mail order business Minerals Unlimited. Merrill obtained the specimen with the J.B. Nichols collection in 1951. Merrill's collection card and label also ship with the specimen.
