Igelström (1866) first described this species using material found in Sweden. The name denotes the golden color produced on heating of the species. Dunn (1995) describes the mineral from Sterling Hill. This specimen shows platy crystals of pyroaurite to 2 mm on a matrix of recrystallized calcite. The original label states "mooreite on chlorophoenicite" but Raman spectroscopy has shown otherwise. A few of the pyroaurite microcrystals (to 2 mm) show sharp hexagonal outlines. Ex Rukin Jelks (label present).
