Senarmontite (Sénarmontite) - Sold

Dana (1851) named sénarmontite in honor of Henri Hureau de Sénarmont (1808-1862), French physicist and mineralogist at the École des Mines, Paris, who first noted the species (Sénarmont, 1851). Senarmontite is an oxide of antimony with cubic symmetry. Crystals are typically octahedral, in this case to 8 mm on edge. While showing some bruising, such crystal clusters of senarmontite are seldom available. They typically date to mining operations before World War I. The mineral darkens on exposure to sunlight, and this specimen shows minimal exposure. This specimen was part of the personal collection of Ralph Merrill, proprietor of the prolific mail order business Minerals Unlimited, obtained in 1952.
