Uraninite is named after the element uranium, which was named after the planet Uranus. Uraninite is the most common of the primary uranium minerals, those having uranium in the 4+ valence state. This is a cluster of sharo crystals to 1.9 across, beginning to surficially alter to an array of yellow uranium oxides and carbonates. The main crystal is approximately 40% complete and may be mounted for display in a few different directions. This specimen was part of the personal collection of Ralph Merrill, proprietor of the prolific mail order business Minerals Unlimited.
