Balangeroite is a magnesium iron silicate mineral related to gageite (Compagnoni et al. 1983). The mineral forms fibers replacing chrysotile in a serpentinite matrix. Further study by Ferraris et al. (1987) indicated a larger unit cell and the presence of two polytypes. This is a fibrous mass of an asbestiform mineral. This specimen comes from Ralph Merrill collection, proprietor of Minerals Unlimited. Purchase includes Merrill's catalog card (and label). Also carries a Michael Mizrahill collection label.
