Copper Minerals I – May 5

This is a gallery of minerals containing copper. As of this writing, the International Mineralogical Association recognizes 665 species containing essential copper, 418 of which also contain oxygen. Many compounds containing divalent copper (Cu2+) have a blue or green coloration, which has drawn attention to copper minerals since ancient times. For instance, malachite and turquoise artifacts are found in ancient tombs, while azurite-based paints color the sky blue in Renaissance frescoes. Modern geologists receive training to recognize the typical colors of copper minerals for their field work. This gallery celebrates the diversity and colors known in copper minerals.

This gallery contains 24 specimens.
